VETERANS of the Gulf War from Burnley and Pendle are being encouraged to come forward if they are feeling ill.
The Soldiers Sailors and Airman's Families Association wants to contact veterans suffering from Gulf War Syndrome so they can be helped and properly assessed.
Ministry of Defence figures suggest only half of the people registered with solicitors and ex-service organisations as being ill have asked to be assessed under the ministry's medical assessment programme.
Worries which have come to the fore have included concern about birth defects among babies of Gulf veterans.
The government has now agreed to a study into establishing whether there is any increased prevalance of illness among Gulf veterans or of birth defects among their children.
The SSAFA has also joined forces with the Royal British Legion, the Ex Services Mental Welfare Society, the Army Benevolent Fund and politicians on the Gulf War Group.
Anyone experiencing problems and unable to get assistance should contact the SSAFA on 01772 260462.
