AN AWARD winning tapestry has been handed over to Burnley's new-look library.
The unique work was created by artist Christine Sawyer for a national competition.
Her £4,000 design was commissioned after it was chosen from design ideas displayed at the library. It had an overwhelming vote of support from library users and staff.
Christine, who lives in Exeter, wove the tapestry using hand dyed wools. It took her six months to complete the 8ft x 5ft panel, paid for by Lancashire County Council, the Stocks Massey Bequest Fund and North West Arts Board.
Christine says she wanted the tapestry to show how books can widen horizons for readers.
She said: "The simple act of reading a book can transport the reader into an extraordinary variety of other dimensions, which can be, among other things, educational, informative, romantic, exotic or even dangerous."
The tapestry is the latest acquisition for the library which won a major national architectural award after a £1.7 million refit.
Lancashire Library Committee vice-chairman County Councillor Roy Lewis said: "This new addition to Burnley Library complements the already imaginative use of art both inside and outside.
"I am sure the tapestry will be a source of pleasure to library users in Burnley for many years and I am delighted to accept this marvellous piece of work on behalf of the County Council."
