Thwaites drinkers were facing two whopping increases in the price of a pint in 24 hours.
Beer was to rise between 6p and 8p a pint when the Blackburn brewer increased its prices next week.
The following day Chancellor Norman Lamont looked set to further force up the price in his budget. Thwaites confirmed it was to slap a pre-budget increase on its beer but refused to say how much.
