DISABLED fishing enthusiasts will be given the chance to enjoy their sport in safety, thanks to a dedicated angling club.
Newrad Fishing Club in Darwen has started to build a new, specially-designed fishing lodge at Watery Lane Reservoir.
The ambitious £15,000 plan, which includes footpaths, gates and a safety platform, has been in the pipeline for three years.
Volunteers from the club, which has 30 adult and 10 junior members, started work on the site after receiving the lease for the land.
Their fundraising activities have so far netted over £5,000, which includes the £970 proceeds of a sponsored fishing match held at the week-end.
Fundraising co-ordinator Alan Lord said: "There are no facilities in this area for disabled anglers and we wanted to do something about it.
"The new lodge will be for the use of anybody with a disability, including those confined to a wheelchair."
The club, which already has two disabled members, is looking for support and sponsorship to help them continue the building programme.
Mr Lord explained: "We have had lots of encouragement but desperately need more cash to keep things moving.
"As soon as we get money from a grant or fund-raising event we will start work on the next phase."
Any group or organisation who can help Newrads reach their target should ring Mr Lord on 706558.
