TWO fine headed goals by league leading scorer David Gardiner, ably supported by the mercurial Michael Murphy, set up Radcliffe Borough for a league cup final appearance following their 3-0 win over Ashton United.
But thoughts of an all-Bury final were dashed when Woodbank went down 2-1 at Mossley.
Woodbank repeatedly squandered gilt edged scoring opportunities in the opening goalless half and continued to exert relentless pressure in the second period with man of the match Wayne Dalton hitting the bar and then the post as the home goal led a charmed life.
On 60 minutes a home breakthrough saw two Woodbank defenders collide and the loose ball roll agonisingly into the net.
Mossley struck again two minutes later when a fine solo run ended with a mis-hit shot which completely deceived the visiting defence.
The twin substitution of strikers Rob Phillips and Carl Price for Carl Greenhalgh and Peter Winn worked wonders with Phillips restoring the deficit and Woodbank laying siege on the home goal for a desperate 20 minutes but, alas, to no avail.
