HOMES were evacuated and one of a town's busiest roads closed after workmen found a live hand grenade in an empty house.
One workman carried the World War II souvenir and hid it behind a pile of bricks until the bomb squad arrived from Liverpool and took it away.
The grenade was found on a living room mantelpiece at a house undergoing renovation in Fenwick Street, Burnley.
