YOUNG Ashley Hudson takes some licking when it comes to remaining cool in a crisis.
The eight-year-old Badger in the Padiham Division of the St John Ambulance used his training to save the life of his little brother, Shane, three, when he choked on a lollipop.
His life-saving techniques and calmness have been recognised by the presentation of a framed certificate and letter from the St John Commissioner in Chief.
Ashley is the only Badger in Lancashire to receive the award.
His father, Andrew, explained what happened.
On Sunday, November 12, at their home in Dean Range, Blackburn Road, Padiham, Shane began to choke on a lolly which had become dislodged from the stick.
Mr Hudson said: "While his other brothers and sisters panicked and came running to us, Ashley calmly sat down beside Shane, leaned him forward and slapped his back successfully dislodging the lolly.
"It was remarkably brave for Ashley, who was seven, and shows that he has listened to what he has been taught.''
Padiham Divisional Officer, Norman Mitchell, said: "We are very proud of Ashley for his action and in following training given at our meetings.''
The framed certificate and letter were handed over by Commissioner for Lancashire, Mrs Carole Phillips.
She hoped the incident would prompt others to learn first aid and that other Badgers and Cadets would put any skills learned into practice if the time came.
