EAST Lancashire youngsters will play a major part in helping to rebuild a school in war-torn Bosnia.
Every school in the county is to be asked to come up with cash-raising ideas for the project.
The scheme is the idea of Lancashire Fire Service and War On Want, who have already helped build a nursery for children and young refugees in Tusla.
While out in the stricken community, they came across a school which had been destroyed during the war.
Now plans are under way to rebuild the school in a bid to bring a sense of normality to the young war victims.
Lancashire County Councillor Harry Caunce told the Education Committee: "We would like the children to come up with any ideas on raising funds."
Coun Geoff Roper added: "I back this scheme fully.
"Conditions over there are not civilised and the very least we can do is support the youngsters."
Coun Alan Hackett said: "Those children are the future and it is essential the next generation gets it right."
About 60 officers from the fire brigade - including some from Accrington - are involved in the project.
They will be making regular trips to Bosnia in three teams of 20 to keep an eye on the rebuilding scheme.
A special circular will be sent to every school in the county giving details and asking youngsters for help.
