A two year battle by locals to prevent building on the open space at the heart of Pennington has been lost.
Village green campaigners hoped to block building plans, even though outline planning permission to develop the Beech Walk site was granted in January 1994.
Wainhomes (Northern) Ltd have been given permission to build 36 detached homes on the 3.7 acre playing fields site.
Protesters say loss of the field will deprive local children of a safe, local place to play and will also deprive local sporting teams who have used the site for generations.
A spokesman said:"The Guild has been a place of enjoyment for generations since the Second World war but if it is built on, it will be lost forever."
Ward Cllr Brian Jarvis's request for the matter to be deferred was refused at Tuesday's planning committee meeting.
