ST HELENS is to play host to one of the biggest events in the bowling calendar. It's the World Short Mat Bowling Championships, staged at Sutton Leisure Centre on the weekend of March 30 and 31. And about 130 bowlers from 11 nations will be competing. They will be representing England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Malta, Portugal and India. St Helens Mayor Keith Deakin will open the event at 10am on the Saturday morning and play will continue until 6.30pm. Play will re-start at 9.30 on the Sunday, with the finals being played on Sunday afternoon.
