ST HELENS Sutton AC star Diane Appleton has clinched the Merseyside Schools Cross Country League title. She entered the final race, with three first places and a third behind her from previous rounds.
And again she showed the opposition a clean pair of heels to claim the crown. Meanwhile, in the national championships at Newark under 13 ace Holly O'Connor finished 23rd. Diane Appleton was 79th, Louisa Davies 237th and Angela Twist 299th as the team placed 24th. At under 15s level Kerrie Langley was 205th and Pamela Fitzsimmons 219th. In the senior women Vera Langley was 123rd, Lisa Griffin 171st, Celia Fitzsimmons 481st and Norma Garvey 557th.
In the under 17s boys Stephen McAllister was 110th and Carl Woodward 243rd. The senior men's event saw Ian White 568th, Jason Hughes 780th, Stan Erlam 1079th, Peter Langley 1468th, Jeff Coates 1870th, John Irwin 1916th, John Appleton 1939th and Alan Davies 1954th.
