THE nationwide guns amnesty ordered by the government in reaction to the Dunblane massacre is no bad thing, but is far from enough.
For though the amnesty will result, as previous ones have, in thousands of weapons being handed in, these will be largely those kept in the first place by people who are responsible citizens - as is proved by their positive response to the amnesty call.
It is the guns in unsafe hands that are the problem. And, though it awaits the recommendations of Lord Cullen's inquiry into the Dunblane murders, on top of this amnesty, the government must, we think, be minded now to bringing in the toughest gun laws in the world.
