NEW TECHNOLOGY could cut crime in Darwen if a proposal to establish a video security system in the town is given the go-ahead.
Blackburn Borough Council and Lancashire Police are putting together a joint bid for government cash to install closed circuit television in the town centre.
They hope the new initiative will protect shoppers and evening visitors and deter vandals and thieves. If their bid is successful, a 24-hour service will start involving three cameras and monitoring equipment at Darwen Police Station. A link-up with Blackburn Shopping Centre's CC TV network may also be possible.
Councillor Sue Reid, chair of Blackburn Council's urban regeneration sub committee, said: "I live close to Darwen town centre and I am fully aware of the crime and vandalism that takes place on a regular basis.
"If we can get the bid accepted by the Home Office, it can only make the town safer and enhance the work the police are already doing."
