THE outlook looks brilliant for locals who help the elderly beat the cold.
Weathergirl Sian Lloyd showered Wigan and Leigh Pensioners' Link with awards signalling their reign as national Coldwatch champs.
The group scooped a £1,000 prize and certificate as winners of the Age Concern/Calor Gas Community Group Coldwatch Award.
"Calor was so impressed with the Link's work we decided to double the amount of backing to £1,000," said Calor Gas marketing boss Keith Glanfield.
"I hope this money will mean the group can continue its vital work in the community on behalf of older people."
The Link's Winter Wise campaign, featuring work with schools, social services and health authorities to promote the welfare of older people in the area, earned the group nomination for the award by Age Concern and Wigan Social Services. Each year youngsters produce pictures for a Winter Wise campaign which highlights the effect of cold Weather on older people.
Age Concern director general Sally Greengross said:"I am delighted Age Concern has been able to recognise the work of Wigan and Leigh Pensioners' Link."
Coldwatch Awards were sponsored by Calor Gas, Best-in Foods and Unigate and backed by Chat magazine.
