ANGRY residents on a quiet Preston housing estate are demanding action to stop motorists speeding through and endangering lives.
People living in Holme Slack Lane and Manor House Lane claim drivers are using the area as a short-cut to avoid traffic lights and congestion on Blackpool Road.
Although the streets are supposed to be for access only, there have been nine accidents in the past ten years involving drivers racing to get to Ribbleton.
Two weeks ago an eight-year-old boy was knocked over as he played in Manor House Lane. He received serious head injuries and needed eight stitches and plastic surgery to his forehead.
Residents are afraid the next accident could prove fatal and have signed a petition. They presented it to the director of Technical Services Mahmoud Labib and Mayor Terry Cartwright this week.
Councillor Cartwright who represents Holme Slack ward said: "Something has to be done, we have to put traffic calming measures in before someone's killed."
Mr Mahmoud Labib, director of Technical Services, said the council had a small budget set aside for road safety measures but it depended on whether members regarded Holme Slack as a priority. And he said that the issue was being looked into and would be put before the Highways committee on the first possible occasion.
