DEVASTATED pub regulars who were reduced to tears by news of the Dunblane tragedy have raised money to send some sunshine to the surviving schoolchildren.

Locals at The Highfield Inn, Grimshaw Park, Blackburn, were so upset by news of the gun massacre that some cried openly.

Now they have sent a touching letter to the people of the Scottish town.

Highfield Inn landlord Derek Wignall said: "People were devastated that such a young community died in such a horrible way. A lot of people in here have young children of the same age as the children who died in Dunblane."

He added: "There were tears when we made the collection and others have just not wanted to talk about it because they are so upset." Regulars dug deep into their pockets on a pre-planned St Patrick's Day celebration after regular Gabriel Cassidy made a moving speech. that began an impromptu collection which raised £110.

Mr Cassidy has penned the touching letter which says: "The money could perhaps go towards a day out for the children who survived, to hopefully bring a little happiness, laughter and smiles to their innocent little faces."

He added: "We have been keeping up with whatever news has been given and the strength, character and will to go on, only proves that good shall and will overcome evil."

The cash total will be boosted by a charity fun night at the pub on April 18 at 7pm, which will include darts, dominoes and pool competitions, a quiz night, disco, raffle and pie and peas supper.
