COLNE'S most famous son returned to reclaim his place of prominence in the town.

The bronze bust of Wallace Hartley, heroic bandmaster on the ill-fated Titanic, came home after a year-long facelift in London.

Two bronze statuettes which were stolen from the statue in 1992 have been re-created to restore him to his former glory and he has found a new resting place on a specially refurbished site near the Municipal Hall. The statuettes, representing valour and music, have been sculpted at the Art Bronze Foundry in London and director Michael Gaskin and sculptor John Doubleday accompanied Wallace on his return.

Council spokesman Tricia Ross said: "We are very pleased with the quality of work and are delighted to bring Colne's most famous son home where he belongs."

Council officers were wearing newly-designed T shirts, advertising Colne's Titanic connection.
