BIG-HEARTED factory staff promise that their £114 donation to the SuperScan Appeal is the first of many this year.
British Aerospace and Royal Ordnance Factories across the country have adopted Marie Curie Cancer Care as their charity to support but workers at ROF Blackburn are also holding a smaller charity challenge raising cash for a local cause.
Eight members of the team are selling football cards and badges, collecting foreign currency and holding raffles to raise money for SuperScan, which aims to buy a £1 million life-saving Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner for East Lancashire. Other fund-raisers this week include Blackburn busker Tom Kay, who has once again been hard at work playing his fiddle for the appeal in the town centre. His donation, along with many others, helped boost the appeal total to £74,278.
Easter egg fun and games plus a car boot sale and raffles are planned for the appeal on Bank Holiday Monday. Staff at the Cemetery Hotel, Darwen, have organised the event which will take place at the pub in the afternoon.
Appeal chairman Mike Trickett is eager to get everyone involved with Superwalk '96 and is hoping that more people contact the office and pledge their support.
The walk is set to take place on Sunday, May 19, and will cover three 20-mile routes around East Lancashire. Anyone can enter and complete as little or as much of the course as they wish. Details can be obtained from the chairmen listed below or the appeals office on 01254 687146.
And children wanting to become tenpenny trailblazers and do their bit for the appeal by collecting coins are also invited to persuade parents and club leaders to get in touch with the chairmen.
People wishing to donate money can contact the appeal chairmen: Terry Barber (Blackburn) on 01254 202495; Maureen Walker (Hyndburn) 234686; Ian Ashton (Darwen) 01200 442500 or 01254 703666; Mary Barnes (Ribble Valley) 01200 25386; Neil Beecham (Burnley) 01282 692684 or Peter Johnson (Pendle) 01282 863505. Money can also be handed in at the main office of Queen's Park Hospital, at the Evening Telegraph offices, or over the counter at any branch of Lloyds, Barclays or TSB.
