BURNLEY'S Marsden Hospital was set for closure, the third to be shut down in the town in three years.

It was to be axed to save cash, with elderly patients transferred to the new Pendle Community Hospital, which was due to open in the summer.

The move followed the previous closures of Bank Hall and Victoria and, like them, the buildings were to be sold to raise money for a new £8 million hospital.
