DOGGEDLY determined to lick the stray dog problem are Council dog wardens Debbie Eastwood and Michelle Moss.

The two four legged's friends, whom live in the same street in Leigh, have been taken on by the Environmental Health department to operate the service previously run by a private contractor.

With experience in coping from everything from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane, or a Jack Russell to a Pit Bull, Debbie and Michelle will be responsible for taking strays into custody, enforcing dog fouling laws and promoting responsible dog ownership.

Debbie and Michelle own five dogs - all rescued - and they will be persuading owners to carry 'poop scoops' when exercising their animals.

School visits and handling complaints are other aspects of their work.

Borough Environmental Health Officer Bob Saunders said: "We are confident we have set up an efficient and cost effective community service.

"We shall use the expertise of the officers to establish a clear 'dog strategy'. They will work in consultation with other agencies, such as the RSPCA, animal welfare groups and community associations, and identify areas of greatest concern.

"But we have no 'magic wand'. Our resources are limited and the solution to the area's dog problem lies squarely with owners. Do not let your dogs stray, clear up after your dog if it fouls a public place."

The Dog Warden phone number is 01942 705030.
