WITH the launch of Bury Metro Council's new LitterLine residents around the Borough can now report any litter problems in their area. All they need to do is call 253 5850 and once a call has been received Council staff will try to solve problems as quickly as possible.

Action will be taken to remove litter from Local Authority-owned land, while the owners of private land found to be littered will be traced and told of their responsibilities.

The new Litterline is all part of Bury's Brighter Borough project and includes the anti-litter initiative.

Bury Metro Council Leader John Byrne said: "Whenever you talk to local people, litter is one of those subjects which always comes up.

"Through our street cleaning operations we have attempted to tackle the worst of the problems, and the success of that must be judged by the fact that last year we were second overall in Greater Manchester and 11th nationwide in an independent cleanliness survey of town centres carried out by the Tidy Britain Group.

"Having said that, there is always room for improvement hence the launch of our own Brighter Borough initiative and the LitterLine."

Over the coming weeks giant Brighter Borough posters will go up on prominent sites around the Borough including bus stops, stations and the Metrolink.

The Local Authority's own vehicles will act as mobile poster-boards while schools, colleges and public buildings will also be involved in promoting an anti-litter approach.
