WORKING in partnership Bury Metro, the Irwell Valley Housing Association and the private owner are bringing one of Radcliffe's famous landmarks back to life with a multi-million-pound investment. The former Boar's Head Hotel is being given a new role in the town.

Its ground floor is being available for retail use and the first and second floors converted into 15 self-contained flats to be managed by the Housing Association.

The scheme is right in the middle of the Radcliffe renewal area and holds a place of prominence, helping to breath new life into the centre.

The original and attractive brick facade is to be preserved, retaining a building of note and at the same time providing extra facilities for shoppers and much needed rented accommodation.

Said Radcliffe Renewal Advisory Committee Chairman Councillor Kevin Scarlett, "While many new things have been introduced into Radcliffe we are still very conscious of helping to preserve the past wherever possible."

He feels the building was ideal, being both adaptable and in a prime spot.

He explained that the council has invested millions in the town during the first half of the ten-year renewal programme.

"However, the on-going regeneration of the town can be boosted further when we can work in partnership with others," he declared, adding that he certainly expected further improvements in years to come.

Bury Metro Housing Committee Chairman Councillor John Smith echoed Mr. Scarlett's views when they both attended the official opening of the revamped building.
