MATT SMITH'S final flourish made it a happy Easter for Westleigh Village A.

His goal clinched the Leigh & District Amateur Football League's Davenport Cup Final in a Good Friday thriller against Blue Lion.

The match went into extra-time as underdogs Lion stunned the big guns with goals from Alan Litherland and Brian Kelly's double.

But Westleigh battled hard for 3-3 at the end of normal time, Ralph Eastham 2 and Chris Sanderson (pen) on target.

Smith tucked the winner away in extra time and was adjudged man of the match, but Lionman Kelly couldn't have been far behind.

Meanwhile, Westleigh B took a massive step towards securing the Division Two title with a resounding 9-3 demolition of Albion Inn with Jason Lee smacking SIX goals. Also on top target were Neil Arnold, Steve Brady and Willy Coleman.

Bottom club POL Our House gained their first league win since November, beating next-to-bottom Leigh Phoenix 2-0 in a dour struggle, Andy Durrington and Dave Bailey (pen) on the mark.

Wayne Pitchford's MOM for Leigh Phoenix earned him the club award for Player of the Year.

In the Carl Brown Memorial Trophy Three Crowns A and Union Arms A shared the points at 1-1. Dave Gibson opened the scoring for Crowns with a penalty, Jamie Hopkins hit a late equaliser for Union.

The League is on the lookout for a League Secretary. Applications in writing to Frank Batchelor, 32 Warwick Road, Atherton M46 9PL.
