FAIR comment by John Blunt (LET, March 27) - why should we compensate farmers?

What about all the people who will lose their jobs because of what is now happening in the beef industry? Will they get compensation? I think not.

If I lose my job because people don't buy the goods I produce, would I be compensated? No, like many other industries and businesses, it would be a case of grin and bear it - there are no handouts, big or little for them. Many farmers have had rich pickings by feeding a cheap, infected, animal-waste product to their cattle, and now they should have to face the consequences like everyone else.

Better still, why not make those pay whose brainchild it was to produce this waste product in the first place.
