A NEW play area has been officially unveiled to provide much-needed facilities for local youngsters on a housing estate.
Coun Margaret Bell opened the playground on Avon Drive, Barnoldswick, then invited youngsters from Coates estate to "test drive" the new swings and slides.
The site was owned by the town council which passed it over to Pendle Council. After talks with the Coates residents' association, the council agreed to fund the playground to give youngsters the chance to let off steam in a safe environment. The council's playgrounds officer, Alan Binns, said: "There are swings, a climbing frame with a slide, and smaller swings and rocking animals for the younger children. The playground should be very popular with children and help to keep them off the streets.
"There is also a safe surface, dog-proof fencing and seats for parents who want to keep an eye on their children while they play."
