HEALTH service staff in East Lancashire were 'appalled' by the swingeing job cuts announced at two top London hospitals - and feared they might be next for the axe.

They said that the 600 job losses at Guy's and Lewisham Hospitals, which won Independent Trust status three weeks ago, could be a forerunner of similar cuts, if Burnley was to get the go-ahead to go-it-alone the following year.
