REGARDING T Momoniar's remarks (Letters, April 17) concerning the Coroner Andre Rebello's use of 'discretion' when dealing with post mortem examinations, it seems to me that surely a 'discretion' does not exist.
If a doctor has been unable to issue a certificate of death, for whatever reason, then a cause of death must be established by other means.
If these other means require an inquest/post mortem to be carried out, then so be it.
The coroner has a duty to investigate all certain deaths and to establish cause of death where others have been unable to do so. Discretion does not enter into the equation.
I know Mr Rebello would treat every case with equal care, respect, consideration and impartiality.
