COLIN Hendry's extension to his "love affair" with Blackburn Rovers until the summer of 2001 is bad news for some of Europe's top clubs.
Portuguese giants Benfica will be amongst the disappointed continental parties who were known to be ready and waiting to make a move on the Scottish International defender.
But an emotional Hendry, pictured right, one of several Rovers stars to constantly figure in widespread transfer speculation, told me of his "total delight" in securing a three-year extension on his existing contract which will see him stay a key member of Rovers present and future plans until beyond his 35th birthday.
And it is a future he insists is full of hope: "I love this club and to win the title here last season was the greatest feeling. I believe the club is geared up for much more success over the coming years. "We have the facilities, the players and the support and it is brilliant to know I will be a part of what lies ahead."
Chairman Robert Coar, describing Hendry as one of the best centre halves in the country, also christened the giant defender "an adopted Blackburnian."
"That's how I feel too. It isn't every Scottish footballer who comes down to England and fares well, but I feel I have gone from strength to strength.
"I believe we can go on to mount a championship challenge again next season and although this campaign may be considered a little disappointing after that title win, we have still managed a top six spot as we stand to stay in contention for a UEFA Cup place."
Away from the professional implications, Hendry also spoke of the delight he feels on behalf of his family and friends.
"We have lived in Blackburn throughout my time down here and we know the place like the back of our hands.
"I have a lovely family who I am very proud of and I know that they and my best friends will be pleased with the developments." "I go a long way back with Blackburn Rovers and this new contract means an awful lot to me.
"Working hard and doing well has given me a great lifestyle and I believe this agreement goes a long way towards knocking back the claims that there is no longer any loyalty in football."
Hendry has been much more to the supporters and townspeople of Blackburn than simply a Rovers' star player.
He has been actively involved in a succession of community-based activities, notably numerous personal appearances.
Little wonder that Mr Coar described him as a "wonderful servant and great ambassador for our club."
