MARLON Broomes could be a surprise contender for a place in Blackburn Rovers' side for tonight's Lancashire FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United at Ewood.
A big crowd is expected for the game when Rovers' youngsters, who have already clinched the championship of the Lancashire League Second Division, try to claim a memorable "double".
If England youth international Broomes is back, it would be a major boost for Rovers who have virtually a full-strength squad to choose from.
The defender has been on the long-term absentee list with a thigh injury but he trained well yesterday and youth coach Alan Irvine said: "We didn't think there was any chance of him playing before training, but he could now be in contention."
Rovers know they face a big test against a United side who reached the quarter finals of the major national competition, the FA Youth Cup, before losing to Liverpool.
And United also defeated Tranmere - Rovers' FA Youth Cup conquerors - to make the county final.
But, with up-and-coming young talents such as wingers Damien Duff and Damien Johnson to provide service for strikers James Beattie and James Thomas, Rovers believe they have a chance tonight.
"Both teams like to play good football and pass the ball around, so I am pleased we are playing United as it promises to be an excellent game," said Irvine.
"They are always a good side with plenty of good players.
"But I think we too have players who could give them problems, just so long as the lads don't freeze.
"Everyone is looking forward to it. The boys enjoyed the tremendous reception they received at Ewood last Saturday when they collected their trophy and I hope it's a great game.
"We believe there is going to be a decent crowd and the players will appreciate all the encouragement the fans can give them."
Five substitutes can sit on the bench tonight, so Rovers will choose their 16-man squad from: Williams, Benson, Brewer, McCallion, Trudgill, Broomes, Brown, Hope, Worrell, Owler, Chisholm, Fitzpatrick, Staton, Watkins, Ryan, Johnson, McAvoy, Duff, Beattie, Thomas, Cassin, Obeng.
Martin Rimmer is out injured at the moment, while Scott Hewitt and Phil Taylor, two youngsters who are to be released, are currently training with Ayr United with a view to signing.
Rovers have done their homework on a United side that will include last year's England captain John Curtis in defence.
All three of the senior youth staff, Irvine, Jim Furnell and Kevin Sheedy, have seen them in action.
The whole of the Jack Walker Stand will be open tonight (kick-off 7pm) and admission is free for season-ticket holders. Other spectators can pay on the turnstiles, £4 adults, £2 concessions.
Radio Rovers will broadcast a special transmission tonight for the special occasion, going live on air at 5pm.
