ADRIAN Heath has warned his squad: "You are playing for your futures - despite Second Division safety."

Burnley wind up their away programme with a difficult trip to Walsall tonight.

And after the weekend victory at Wrexham lifted the black cloud of relegation, all thoughts are now on a re-building job for next season.

But Heath was in no mood for an end-of-season cruise at the Bescot Stadium as he left for the West Midlands today.

He warned: "The intensity might have gone out of the fixture in terms of the importance of the game, but it matters to me.

"It's not a meaningless game for my players. Too many still have to convince me that they have a long term future at Turf Moor.

"From the squad point of view I'm still open minded about the players we are going to keep and those that will leave.

"Tonight, and the final home game against Shrewsbury, will help determine who will be in my plans. It is up to them that they are worth a place here.

"As I've explained to a lot of the players, if you've not got the ability to go to the Premiership or the First Division, then there's no better place than Burnley.

"It is down from here. It doesn't get any better than Burnley in the lower divisions."

With several of the first team squad out of contract in the summer, Heath is putting the finishing touches to his retained list.

While a number of first team stars will remain in his plans, he could be tempted to clear the decks to bring a host of new faces to Turf Moor.

The retained list should be released early next week. But one man Heath definitely wants in his plans is Barnsley defender Charlie Bishop.

Bishop has created a favourable impression since arriving from Oakwell on transfer deadline day.

Bishop has already expressed his desire to link up with Burnley full-time.

Added Heath: "Charlie has had other offers but, hopefully, he will be with us next season. I'm trying everything to keep him at Burnley.

"He is a player I'd definitely like to sign.

"He is a very good professional and, perhaps, one of the most important things is that he wants to play for Burnley.

"That matters a lot to me. He is a very enthusiastic character and that rubs off on people.

"His loan signing was a big plus for us. He's played in three or four different positions and has already shown his worth."
