THE tennis talents of youngsters from South Ribble Indoor Tennis Centre came to the fore as they qualified for the national final of the Girobank Junior Indoor Tennis Initiative (ITI) Challenge.

The initiative is a partnership between the LTA and local authorities, providing 'pay as you play' facilities at 39 UK regional ITI Centres.

South Ribble was taking part in the regional rounds of an annual nationwide tournament which has been created to give promising youngsters the opportunity to represent their local communities within a competitive tennis playing environment.

The regional round involved matches between Wigan, Warrington, Liverpool, Wirral and South Ribble.

The team from South Ribble now go forward along with seven other finalists to the national final to be played at the Welsh National Tennis Centre in Cardiff on June 15/16.

There, former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade (winner in 1977) will present the Girobank ITI Challenge trophy.

Mike Bane, tennis development officer for the South Ribble team, said: "It's all down to the coaches who work regularly with the children - Mark Schofield, David Shaw and Chris Peets."
