I WOULD like to bring to the attention of all householders in the Wigan Metropolitan area, whose wheelie bins are scheduled for collection on Monday next week, that there is an anomaly under which we are all suffering.
The problem is that we are all being unfairly charged for a service that we are not receiving, in that since 1990, when wheelie bins were introduced, we have not had a deferred collection to cover any Bank Holiday Mondays as we did in the past with the ordinary dustbins.
It is clearly understood that wheelie bins are of a size able to contain household refuse for the average home for two weeks. However, in other areas where regular collections are not on a Monday, they still on the whole get a 52 week service. Those of us unfortunate enough to be on Monday collections are only receiving a reduced service at the same cost.
I have been reliably informed that there are 24,000 homes currently on Monday refuse rounds. This figure brings sharply into focus just how large a problem there is.
If the Council Tax payers affected by this anomaly were to do as I have done, they should write to Mr. J.G. Simm, Borough Engineer, Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, PO Box 86, Civic Buildings, New Market Street, Wigan WN1 1RP. When writing, request a refund for last year's overcharging, and for this year's charge to be adjusted accordingly. If enough tax payers directly involved make the effort to do this, there may be a chance that these requests are met.
