IREAD with concern your unnamed correspondent's warning to potential applicants of the 'mine field' of the Do It Yourself Shared Ownership (DIYSO) scheme administered by North British Housing Association (Letters, April 30).
DIYSO gives people the opportunity to part buy, part rent a home they would have otherwise been unable to afford on the private market. The scheme is backed by government funding and, during 1995, more than 120 Lancashire households purchased homes under their initiative through North British.
The Association and its solicitors have developed a high degree of proficiency in administering the DIYSO scheme. The vast majority of applicants are able to secure their new home with a period of three to four months from choosing a property.
Our experience is that, in the few instances where problems have occurred, delays have resulted directly from the performance of a limited number of solicitors acting on behalf of either the vendor or the purchaser.
