A CORONER has promised that a thorough investigation will probe the death of karate expert John Gardiner who died in police custody.
Andre Rebello opened an inquest into the death of the 40-year-old father-of-two, who died in the early hours of Saturday following his arrest in Glenluce Crescent, Blackburn
Mr Gardiner's brother, David, walked out of yesterday's hearing after about five minutes.
Mr Rebello revealed that a post-mortem carried out by Home Office pathologist William Lawler had failed to find a cause of death. But he said he had not found any injuries on Mr Gardiner's body.
He said: "If it had been that injuries had caused Mr Gardiner's death Dr Lawler would have been able to say that."
The Police Complaints Authority has been asked to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Gardiner's death.
The inquest was adjourned and a full hearing with a jury will take place later this year.
