SCHOOLS Minister Robin Squire stepped in at the last minute to replace Gillian Shephard at the opening of the Lancashire Area West Training and Enterprise Council (LAWTEC).
Education and Employment Secretary Mrs Shephard pulled out of the ceremony to launch a crackdown on schools which are failing to teach children to read.
At the opening of the LAWTEC offices in Preston on Tuesday, Mr Squire presented staff with an Investors in People award. He said: "We must continue to prepare our young talent for the world of work that awaits them by working with schools, colleges and universities. I am encouraged to see LAWTEC and Lancashire County Council coming together as Career Link, the new careers service company in Western Lancashire."
