FOLLOWING the death on Monday of a 91 year old Bury man in a road traffic accident involving a marked police car and a Renault, the Independent Police Complaints Authority is to supervise an inquiry. The accident happened at Rufford near Ormskirk on the A59 and Lancashire Constabulary say that the police car, a Maestro answering an emergency call, collided with a Renault which was emerging from the A581.
James Disley of Huntley Mount Road was sitting in the rear of the Renault. He was taken to Ormskirk Hospital where he died from his injuries.
The other three occupants were Harry Disley (68) of Morley Street, Bury, Hilda Disley (68) also of Morley Street, and the driver, Sarah Alice Thompson (72), again of Morley Street.
They were taken to Southport and Formby District General Hospital. Harry Disley, who was sitting in the rear of the car, was seriously injured.
Authority member Ann kelly has agreed to the appointment of Superintendent Bernard Kershaw, divisional commander at Lancaster, as the investigating officer.
She said that ten road traffic accident injuries had been referred to the Authority for supervision so far this year.
"We will ensure that the investigation is thorough and impartial.
"The results will be sent to H M Coroner for the public inquest" she added.
