Calling all Al Jolson impersonators.
Would-be "Mammy" singers will be able to take to the stage at Clitheroe's Civic Hall Cinema on June 2 - National Cinema Day.
To celebrate the silver screen centenary, Civic Hall manager John Williamson has decided to mark the occasion by screening the blockbuster film of 1947, Jolson Sings Again.
This will be followed by the bang-up-to-date computer animation Toy Story, contrasting the old and the new.
"Al Jolson played a significant part in the life of the cinema by being the first person to talk and sing in the first Talkie," said John, who with his wife Dorothy has spent a lifetime in the cinema, owning picture houses in Wales and the North West. The Al Jolson Society is one of the largest fan clubs in the world and because of this, there are many fans would would like to have a go at, impersonating their idol by singing or miming.
So on Sunday, June 2, Al Jolson will sing again!
"With the help of one of the country's leading Jolson entertainers, Steve King, and his musical director Colin Hilton, we thought it was the ideal time to give all would-be impersonators a break," said John.
On that day cinemas throughout the country will be marking National Cinema Day 100 by charging just £1 admission - representing one penny for each year of cinema.
Jolson Sings Again will be screened at 2.30pm and 8.00pm and all those wishing to take part should contact Preston Film Services, 57 Meadow Street, Preston, PR1 1TS or telephone 01253 857299 (daytime only).
