JASON Wilcox aimed to take Alan Shearer's advice as he prepared to walk out at Wembley this afternoon, wearing a senior England shirt for the first time.

"Alan has told me to be myself and that's what I aim to do," said the Blackburn Rovers winger whose comeback has been crowned in the most dramatic fashion by the international cap from Terry Venables.

"I just want to enjoy it.

"There's no pressure on me, apart from the pressure I put on myself."

Wilcox first caught Venables' eye as Rovers began to emerge as strong challengers to Manchester United's dominance.

He was called up for training with the squad and, in the first half of Rovers' championship season, 1994-95, was rewarded with his first-ever international honour.

But an England B game against the Republic of Ireland at Anfield, when he impressed the international staff, was the forerunner of a nightmare year.

Cruciate knee ligament damage struck as the title run-in began and Wilcox missed the climax, as well as most of last season.

Venables, however, showed he hadn't forgotten him and a call to the squad for the last England game was a hint that the winger had done enough in his comeback to put him back in contention.

"I have had a really stressful 12 months but couldn't have had a better end to the season," he added.

"When I was in the last squad for the Croatia game, it was a big surprise and it's the same about playing against Hungary."

Rovers have offered new terms to two of their young professionals, goalkeeper Chris McCrone and left back Tony Whealing.
