ANGRY North Shore hoteliers and residents are campaigning for a clean-up of the area in time for the summer season.

In particular, members of RONSA (Revitalisation Of the North Shore Area), want to see Gynn Square roundabout return to its former glory.

At the moment the roundabout is in a state of disrepair and in desperate need of a sponsor to improve and maintain its appearance.

Chairperson of RONSA, Elaine Hodgin, who runs the Inglewood Hotel, Holmfield Road, said: "We need to clean up the area in time for summer.

"People visiting North Shore have commented on the decline of the area over the past few years and we are committed to doing something about it."

The RONSA group, which formed 18 months ago and now has 130 members, received an award recently at the Keep Blackpool Tidy Awards for its contribution to the environment and, in particular, to the RONSA pressure which led to the refurbishment of the sunken and sparrow gardens in the Gynn area.

Now they have turned their attention to the roundabout which is an important landmark in the area, seen by thousands of tourists as they arrive in the resort.

But the council has insufficient funds to maintain any project and cannot find a suitable sponsor for the roundabout.

Blackpool's chief engineer John Shaw said: "We would like to enhance the appearance of the roundabout which is in a prime spot in the resort but we simply do not have the funds at the moment.

"If we could find a sponsor we would be delighted - we have had no direct approach as yet but are looking."

NORWEB sponsors the roundabout during the Illuminations period but for the rest of the year it is left alone, a situation which RONSA finds unsatisfactory.

Elaine said: "If sponsors of other roundabouts have to maintain their appearance all the year round why should NORWEB be any different?

"We are not allowed to carry out our short-term plans for the roundabout because of their display which runs for just two months of the year."

Anyone who wants to help revitalise North Shore, or would like more information about RONSA should contact treasurer Sylvia Jackson on 352413.
