AFTER attending a special European Youth Conference in Brussels as the guest of Euro MP Gary Titley, 21-year-old Helen Nugent's verdict was that Britain must become more involved in Europe, otherwise we are going to be left behind! Helen, from Hey Croft in Whitefield, was chosen to represent Greater Manchester West at the Conference by Gary Titley's Euro Constituency Labour Party.
She was part of the British delegation to the 200-strong gathering which included representatives from all 15 EU member countries and was organised by the Party of European Socialists.
Helen said: "It was a thrilling experience to see so many nationalities coming together under one roof and debating issues of common concern.
"The event was organised in such a way that everyone got to know each other really well." Language differences did not present any problems although Helen did go with the advantage of speaking fluent French.
"I was delighted to spend time with my Euro MP and get a first hand account of the workings of the EU," she added.
One of the high spots for Helen was when the PES Leader in the European Parliament, Pauline Green, addressed the Conference.
"Mrs Green used the phrase "constructive Europeans" which struck a chord with most of the delegates.
"Her message was that you can love your country and still be a committed European - it's not a case of one against the other," said Helen.
After returning to the UK Helen's only regret was that the Conference had not lasted a few days longer!
