ST HELENS motor dealer Andy Middlehurst, will have a good lead on the starting grid when he lines up for the fourth round of the 1996 British Saloon Car Championship this Bank Holiday Monday, May 27, at Brands Hatch.
At Donnington, Andy - of Middlehurst Nissan in Jackson Street- qualified in pole position on the first day of racing with a blistering lap which was two seconds below the lap record. The lap was aided by Dunlop's new development tyre compound for the mighty Nissan Skyline GTR.
Andy, from Rainford, made a good start into Redgate Corner and was nearly beaten by the Escort Cosworth of Graham Coomes. Middlehurst and Coomes were side by side down Craner Curves, followed by the rest of the 30 car grid, but it was Andy who braked Coomes on the entry to the Old Hairpin. Taking the lead, Andy held a gap of two seconds to the chequered flag.
Andy leads the Championship into the fourth round on Bank Holiday Monday.
