WHEELCHAIR basketball teams from all over Europe will be converging on St Helens during the St Helens Show to take part in the Meteors Wheelchair Basketball Club St Helens Show Invitation Tournament.
The event will be the biggest of its kind in Britain, with 20 teams from all over Europe taking part.
Games will be played over the three days of the show (July 26 to July 28) at Sutton Sports Centre and sponsors for the event are the National Westminster Bank, Sports Match, St Helens MBC, The Sports Council and Meteors WBC.
Steve Wrigley, customer services branch manager of the St Helens branch of Nat West, said: "It is pleasing that the bank can be involved in such a major way with this inaugural event, which should promote grass roots development of this sport."
It is hoped that this wheelchair basketball tournament will become a regular feature of the St Helens Show and that it will make members of the public realise just how people with disabilities cope and get on with their lives.
The costs of putting on this challenging tournament are high and sponsors are still being sought to help make ends meet. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for the tournament, or would like to make a donation contact Peter Jackson on St Helens 607946.
