A NEW local initiative is being launched to clean up Atherton.
The scheme is being launched by Derek Bullock, former environmental officer for Atherton Heritage Society.
His new scheme called Atherton Environmental Projects is a new voluntary body which will continue the work of the Heritage Society in carrying out a regular programme of stream cleans, tree planting, anti-litter actions and helping to promote a major new greenway connecting Bolton to Pennington Flash through Atherton using the old, disused Bolton and Leigh Railway of 1828.
Derek said: "Talks have begun with Bolton MBC, Wigan MBC and Bolton Civic Trust to produce a joint bid for National Lottery funding. If this process is successful, this new route would provide walkers and cyclists with a fume free alternative for journeys between local urban areas.
"Anyone wanting to be part of this exciting new project should initially contact myself on 01942 879948 after 6pm on weekdays."
