CAVERS will be leaping off the top of a hotel in Burnley centre to raise cash so they can continue to help others.
Members of Burnley Caving Club have for years shown youngsters the ropes by introducing them to the sport. They have been told they have to have leadership certificates costing £250 to continue their voluntary work.
The certificates are to comply with recent safety requirements introduced after teenagers on an outward bound course were killed when they got into difficulties while canoeing in the sea.
Member Nick Earnshaw said: "Without the certificates the club can no longer introduce new youngsters to the sport. We need the support of everyone to be able to continue with our training programme."
The cavers are opting to show off their skills to raise the cash by attempting to collectively abseil a vertical mile from the roof of the Comfort Friendly Hotel on the Keirby roundabout.
The descent starts at noon on Saturday, June l.
Each member of the team will be sponsored, and every penny made will go towards cave leadership courses.
The hotel is also the venue for a special dinner planned for February next year to celebrate the club's 45th anniversary. Caving friends from all over the world are expected.
