LANCASTER have opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Vaux Northern League after their convincing win at Fleetwood on Saturday. Nearest rivals Chorley had to be content with a home draw against Blackpool.

Lancaster bowled out Fleetwood for 173 at Broadwater, then went on to win with five wickets in hand, professional Lawrie Williams contributing 86.

Reigning champions Morecambe won a high scoring game against Kendal. Terry Hunte smashed an unbeaten 109 out of the Cumbrians 219 for 3, but Morecambe's Steve Pope replied with an exciting 86 and at the same time took his side to a thrilling victory on 221 for 8.

Roland Horridge made an unbeaten century as he skippered Chorley to 241 for 4, only for Blackpool to hold on at 189 for 8.

Preston scored more than 100 in the league for the first time this season in their game against Leyland - John Fleetwood top scored in their 184 for 7.

Leyland started well through Paul Tebay and Chris Sim, but ran out of time on 151 for 5.

David Makinson was in the hitting mood for Leyland DAF against Darwen. His 69 brought about 153 for 8 for the Sandy Lane side, but Darwen's Gary Jackson (66) partnered by professional Peter Skuse (38) saw the East Lancashire side through to victory with two wickets in hand.

In the remaining games, St Annes hit Netherfield for 221 for 7, Lancashire's Andrew Flintoff once again top scoring with 87.

Netherfield came within 50 runs of a fine win with 8 wickets and 10 overs remaining, but the fading light saw them collapse to 202 for 9 and force a draw.
