THE familiar cavalry charge of the Great Hameldon Hill Race lit up the hills above Hyndburn.
Almost 300 intrepid competitors tackled the grisly gradients in the annual event.
Both seniors and juniors took part in their individual races over the local fells yesterday.
The massed ranks of athletes braved weather which was more winter-like than spring as they set off from the start in Avenue Parade, Accrington.
Fell-running enthusiasts from clubs across East Lancashire tackled the gruelling event.
