NEWLYWEDS Richard Schofield and Karen Riding had to fork out a little extra after their village wedding.
True to tradition at Tockholes, Darwen, farmer Richard had to pay a "fine" to remove a roadblock so he could take Karen, a milk roundswoman, back to his own village. Meanwhile, bride's father Dennis Riding had a rather unusual 'Get me to the church on time' plea, after mischievous members of the Young Farmers Club used their tractors to block him in as he tried to get to St Stephen's Church, Tockholes. Dennis and his wife Donna were only allowed to pass after handing over £20 to club funds.
The newlyweds also had a rather unusual guard of honour - Turton Young Farmers Club members brandishing pitchforks - when they left the church.
"We had a feeling something would happen!" said Dennis, of Close Farm, Tockholes.
Karen, 22, who has a 100-gallon milk round, and Richard, who farms at Newton, met at a young farmers' dance. And the couple's jobs meant they could only manage a one-night honeymoon in a hotel before getting back to work early today.
