SIXTY people will lose their jobs next week when British Gas closes its district office in Marton.

Around 65 people currently work at the offices on Clifton Road - some will be relocated to Stockport, some will work from home and 41 will take voluntary redundancy.

The remaining five, who are part-time, will continue to be based locally.

The overall plan is to direct British Gas services to seven area service centres, serving England, Scotland and Wales.

Public relations officer for British Gas, Paul Brinkley, explained: "Obviously it wouldn't be possible for British Gas to make these moves overnight. The idea is relocate staff and offices on a progressive phase system, which has been going on since 1994."

The move is the latest in a plan to cut 25,000 job cuts nationwide in the next five years by centralising offices.

David Wells, managing director of British Gas Services, said: "A lot of detailed work has been going on and it is important that we share our proposals with our employees as soon as possible.

"While everyone involved has been aware of the overall plan, it has been difficult for many to plan ahead without knowing what was happening."

Mr Wells added: "Customers should not notice any detrimental changes as a result of these moves.

"We will continue to operate in the local area."
