AN AMBITIOUS band is marching to its own tune by creating a unique youth orchestra.
And the 18-strong St James' Church Lads and Girls Brigade from Darwen has received a cash boost and some musical instruments to help realise its dream.
Delighted band master Paul Roberts said: "We are attempting to create a unique youth band which can play almost any instrument. We are delighted with the support we are receiving from the local community."
Darwen's Lloyd's Trust and the Ocean Palace Restaurant stepped in to help by donating £350 for new equipment and restoring two old bagpipes which had been given to the band.
The band is appealing for more second-hand instruments and asking local folk to support their fundraising events.
They are also appealing for new members aged between 13-21 years to join their ranks. And there's tuition for those who cannot already play an instrument. The band meets every Sunday at St James' Primary in Darwen between 6-8pm.
They will hold a charity lunch on Friday, June 7 at Darwen Subscription Club, Anyon Street, starting at 8pm.
