ANGRY Labour MPs today accused water bosses of "coining it in" at the expense of the public.
Although North West Water said it expected water supplies would be maintained this summer despite the drought, Hyndburn's Greg Pope said the public was not getting the service it deserved. "We have had a hosepipe ban for months yet North West Water was making the best part of £700 a minute. These people do not care about public service. They only care about private profit.
"They are failing the public but succeeding in lining their own pockets.
"North West Water has one of the highest leakage rates in the country. They could have used the £364 million to plug the leaks and so avoid a hosepipe ban on their customers."
A report issued by water watchdog OFWAT today said that NWW was one of only three companies to meet targets on leakage reduction since 1989.
